Mets have volunteered to play some spring training games in Cuba

The New York Mets have volunteered to play some spring training games in Cuba in 2016 (Rubin, Nov. 11).

“We put our name in,” Mets assistant general manager John Ricco said. “I have no idea where that stands. I don’t know what the criteria is. Maybe it’s a straight lottery. Maybe it’s an East Coast team. We did put our name in for that a couple of weeks ago.”

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred announced on Tuesday that they are planning on holding a series of spring training games in Cuba in 2016.

“Obviously, the federal government has some significant influence on whether that’s going to take place, and there are issues that need to be resolved before that can happen,” Manfred said.

The Mets have not played a game outside of the United States or Canada since 2003, when they traveled to Mexico City to play the Dodgers during spring training.
