Source says Mets are unlikely to re-sign Cespedes

The Mets will “modestly pursue” pending free agent Yoenis Cespedes, but a team source told Adam Rubin of ESPN that it’s “highly likely” Cespedes will sign elsewhere (Nov. 2).

Cespedes, 30, has said multiple times that he would like to re-sign with the Mets, but the club has yet to weigh in on the matter publicly.

The Mets acquired Cespedes from the Tigers on July 31 in exchange for minor league RHP Michael Fulmer. After joining the Mets, Cespedes hit .287 with a .337 OBP and .604 SLG to go along with 17 home runs and 44 RBI in 57 regular season games.

In the postseason, Cespedes hit .222 with a .232 OBP and .352 SLG while hitting two home runs and driving in eight runs in 14 games (54 at-bats).

During the World Series against the Royals, when he made a few defensive miscues in center field and struggled at the plate, Cespedes was playing through a left shoulder injury that he suffered prior to Game 4 of the NLCS.
