Tonight’s Pitching Matchup
Matt Harvey: Received a no-decision in the Mets’ 5-4, 14-inning loss in World Series Game 1 at Kauffman Stadium last Tuesday…Pitched 6.0 innings, allowed three runs, earned, on five hits…Struck out a career low-tying two and walked two…He also struck out two on June 10 vs. San Francisco…It was the fifth time in Harvey’s career that he did not record more strikeouts than walks. . . Harvey is 2-0 through three career postseason starts…The only Mets to remain undefeated after their first four career postseason starts were Jerry Koosman and Bob Ojeda… Harvey became the third pitcher to get a win in each of his first two postseason starts with the Mets…Also done by Tom Glavine in 2006 and Jacob deGrom this year…Harvey has 18 strikeouts this postseason, the third-most for a Mets pitcher in his first three career postseason games behind Jacob deGrom (27) and Noah Syndergaard (20).
Edinson Volquez: Makes his second start of this World Series and fifth of the 2015 postseason after a no-decision in Game 1…It’s his seventh career start in postseason play. Volquez, 32, was 13-9, 3.55 in 33 starts during the regular season, his first in Kansas City. Last Saturday, went six inning and got a no-decision in a contest the Royals eventually won, 5-4 in 14 innings…Volquez learned after the game that his father, Daniel, died in the Dominican Republic earlier that day. He went home to be with his family, returning just prior to Saturday night’s game…In Game 1, Volquez held the Mets to three runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts… Volquez is making his seventh career postseason start, tying him with teammate Johnny Cueto for fifth-most among pitchers born in the Dominican Republic…Volquez is 1-4 with a 6.14 ERA (20 ER in 29.1 IP) in postseason play…he entered the year 0-2 in playoff starts, before earning his first win in Game 1 of the ALCS, tossing 6.0 scoreless innings in a 5-0 victory over the Blue Jays.
Team Notes
Mets Notes: Mets are 8-5 all-time in the postseason when facing elimination, including 1-0 this year (Game 5 of the NLDS at Los Angeles, a 3-2 win)…New York is 6-2 in such games at home… The Mets won two straight games in the 1986 World Series when facing elimination, lost Game 7 of the 1973 World Series at Oakland and fell in Game 5 of the 2000 World Series at home to the Yankees. . . . This is the third time the Mets have trailed 3-1 a best-of-seven series. In 1999, the Mets fell in the NLCS in six games to the Braves and in the 2000 World Series the Mets lost in five games.
Royals Notes: Saturday’s win was the seventh time in 10 wins this fall that KC came from behind to win, the second time in this set against the Mets…trailing 3-2 in the eighth, consecutive one-out walks to Ben Zobrist and Lorenzo Cain set the stage as KC tied the sore on an infield error and then took the lead with RBI hits from Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez…..Ryan Madson’s scoreless seventh inning of relief work earned him a fourth career postseason victory, second this year…Perez finished the night with three hits to lead the 9-hit Kansas City attack. Last night’s comeback was the sixth after KC trailed by multiple runs, breaking the postseason record initially set by the 1996 Yankees (courtesy Elias).
