Frank Viola is not surprised by Mets young pitchers, happy to see their success

Mets Triple-A pitching coach Frank Viola would not go so far as to say he’s surprised by how well Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz have done in the postseason, because they always had the focus and stuff to succeed at this level.

Instead, he is more surprised at how quickly they moved through the system and into the postseason.

“From pitch one of the playoffs through the World Series, these guys have attacked the zone, they’ve gone after it, and they’ve done everything you preach in the minor leagues,” Viola told SNY’s Mets Playoffs Live. “They’ve just taken it the big-league level and continued on.”

According to Viola, he and the coaches — who had the opportunity to work with Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard and Matz — are having a great time together watching their run through October.

In the above video, Viola details what has been most impressive to him about each of the team’s young, starting pitchers.

Viola believes that if he’s former students continue to command their secondary pitches, as they’ve done all postseason, they will be able to contain the Royals in the World Series.

“They still need to command it, locate it and spot,” he concluded. “But, that’s what we do better than anybody.”
