Daniel Murphy was 3-for-4 with an RBI double and a go-ahead home run off Zach Greinke as the Mets defeated the Dodgers, 3-2, Thursday night in Los Angeles.
Murphy hit three home runs in the series, including two off Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.
In the fourth inning, Lucas Duda drew a walk with Murphy on first base. The Dodgers had been playing the shift, moving their third baseman, Justin Turner, toward second base. Turner never returned to third after the walk to Duda, so a heads-up Murphy quickly rounded second and stole third base. He eventually scored on sacrifice fly by Travis d’Arnaud.
“[First base coach Tom Goodwin] is always talking about keeping your head up,” Murphy said after the game. “I’ve never been in the playoffs before, but I’m starting to understand how valuable 90 feet are. It’s absolutely massive. So Goody’s always telling you, ‘Keep your head up, keep your head up.’ That was a situation where fortunately we came out on the right end of it.”
Murphy, 30, who made his debut with the Mets in late 2008, can become a free agent after the season.

In a game that could have very easily been his last in a Mets uniform, Murphy played what may end up being his greatest game. It was sensational. Truthfully, after the stolen base, I thought, ‘Well, as Murphy giveth, he often takes away,’ figuring this likely meant he’d make some bone-headed move later in the game. Instead, he shut me up with a home run that put the Mets up for good. I wrote yesterday how I’d like to see the Mets re-sign him, a) because he’s a popular player, but also because b) he can play three positions the Mets will need help filling at times next season, c) he clearly loves this franchise, and d) he obviously has no problem playing in New York, in this type of pressure, and hitting at Citi Field. I hope last night’s game goes a long way in convincing the front office of his value to the team…
