Royals set rotation for World Series

The Royals announced Monday that RHP Edinson Volquez will start against RHP Matt Harvey in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night in Kansas City.

Volquez, who went 13-9 with a 3.55 ERA in the regular season, is 1-2 with a 4.32 ERA during this year’s postseason.

Royals RHP Johnny Cueto and Mets RHP Jacob deGrom will square off in Game 2 on Wednesday night.

The series will move to Citi Field on Friday, when RHP Yordano Ventura will face RHP Noah Syndergaard. The following night in Game 4, RHP Chris Young, who spent 2011 and 2012 with the Mets, will face rookie LHP Steven Matz.

The entire month of September was dominated by talk of Harvey’s innings and pitch limits. It seemed like the roof was going to fall in if the guy threw one pitch over some special limit. Yet, he’s going to start Game 1 and Game 5 and be available to pitch in relief during Game 7 if needed. Meanwhile, deGrom starts Game 2 and – I assume – Game 6, which will likely make him unavailable in a Game 7. Harvey, in his first season back from Tommy John, despite all the hoopla, will get to throw more pitches and innings than deGrom. This is weird to me. That said, those are going to be fun pitching match ups, no doubt…

The games that worry me are 3 and 4. I don’t like having the two rookies – Syndergaard and Matz – going back to back days with a Game 5 the next night. Terry Collins will almost certainly lean heavily on his bullpen those two games, because that’s what he’s done in most of their starts, but then it’s Harvey and his pitch-count limit going the next night. The three games in Citi Field are going to be wild, I fear. I hope Terry chooses wisely…
