Mets manager Terry Collins and Cubs manager Joe Maddon go way back. When Collins was the manager of the Angels, he hired Maddon to be his bench coach.“When I interviewed him,” Collins said. “His organization and his preparation and his personality, I said, ‘This is the guy.'”
Maddon said he’s still grateful, to this day, for Collins hiring him to his staff.
After Collins’ tenure ended, they went there separate ways — with very different philosophies.
Maddon is infamous for keeping the Cubs loose by bringing in wild animals, magicians and more in the clubhouse. Collins is a little more traditional. But they’re still baseball guys, through and through.
“He always gave me a lot of latitude, permitted me to work,” Maddon said. “The thing about being a bench coach for him that I was always impressed with was, if I had a bunch of information, I would just stand there and I would read it to him, I’d talk to him about it before the game, and he would never forget anything.
“He’s got a really great mind. So we laughed together, we worked together. I’m really happy for his success.”
Collins shares the same thrill for his former bench coach.
“I relied on him a lot, and obviously he’s become extremely successful, and I’m real, real happy for him and real proud of him,” Collins said.
